The people’s village

USC Architecture Guild Design Charrette 2019

Group Project Mitchell Foo & Llilian Nguyen• Spring 2019

An Olympic Village in Carson is the gateway to a precedent that can change the future of Los Angeles urban development. The 2028 Olympic Games provides the right stimulus and attitude that when embodied by a future housing development, will create an urban community that fosters ethnic and productive diversity. Our proposal offers both housing for Olympic athletes and futures residents in Los Angeles after the games, ranging from all classes, from those in need of low-income housing, progressive work/living spaces and private apartments. Our strategy utilizes three housing styles on a staggered grid that allows for a variety of open spaces, and unique spatial interactions between the architecture. The goal is to embody the idea of a global village, offering varying densities and lifestyles, under one collective site. Combining with commercial avenues and green spaces, the site connects back to the surrounding Los Angeles community, offering its spaces and celebrating what the city is and what its future may hold.
